Experience of the PD done in the class!
Professional Dialogue reflection
As a member in group 2 led by Tenzin Jamtsho (moderator), our assessment focused specially on the play materials observed at the Rinpung ECCD center and how they served as an indication towards inclusivity and theory-grounded learning. During the PD session, my friends and I found the materials to be highly inclusive, as they cater to a wide range of developmental needs. For Instance, the use of droppers as a tool provides inclusive support for children at different stages of fine motor development, helping them build the finger strength necessary for the transition to writing. Furthermore, the materials are inclusive of children's emotional needs; traditional props in the dramatic corner, such as items for cooking or praying, allow children to replicate scenes from home, providing a sense of identity and belonging for those feeling displaced and homesick.
However, in the talk I gave in the PD, it stated that to enhance this inclusivity, I believe the materials should be more enriched with more diverse cultural representation, such as items like the altar from the Lhotsampa/Christian community, rather than just the Bhutanese altar, to ensure all children feel their identities are reflected to minimise confusion.
This figure shows how only the Bhutanese altar was present in the dramatic room, prioritizing the other cultures, which felt less inclusive.I also linked our assessment directly to Lev Vygotsky's Socio-cultural theory. Vygotsky viewed materials not as mere toys, but as tools that support social interaction and language development. By using traditional props in collaborative play, children are able to interact within their ZPD, reaching new levels of complexity with the support of peers or facilitators acting as guides on the side.
Additionally, I link these materials to Jean Piaget's theory as the loose parts demonstrate a commitment to open-ended play, leading to children actively constructing their own knowledge through play and hands-on manipulation. I also see reflections of Maria Montessori's idea as purposeful play, where high-quality resources like pattern blocks are used as real-world tools to build the foundations of abstract thinking and logic.
Being in same group , i also felt the same . We got to learn many new ideas from each other. I will surly implement this idea in near future. This PD program made me realize that everyone has a good speaking skills. One drawbacks i found out was time management. I feel we should take into account and improve further.
ReplyDeleteYour reflection is meaningful and clearly shows your understanding of inclusivity and child development theories. Great connection between theory and real classroom observation, Bumpa!
